17. Being a Midwife
沒有必要的時候智慧的領導者決不插手。團隊會感覺到領導者的存在,但往往團隊會自己運作。
The wise leader does not intervene unnecessarily. The leader's presence is felt, but often the group runs itself.
次級的領導者多做多言,後面總有一大群追隨者,而且喜歡成為一派宗師。
Lesser leaders do a lot, say a lot, have followers, and form cults.
更次級的領導者利用恐懼來激勵團隊並以強勢來克服抗拒力。那些最令人敬畏的領導者才有最糟的名聲。
Even worse ones use fear to energize the group and force to overcome resistance.Only the most dreadful leaders have bad reputations.
記住你只是在引導另一個人的歷程。這不是你的歷程。不要介入。不要控制。不要突顯你自己的需要和見解。如果你不信任對方能走出自己的歷程,對方也不會信任你。
Remember that you are facilitating another person's process. It is not your process. Do not intrude. Do not control. Do not force your own needs and insights into the foreground.If you do not trust a person's process, that person will not trust you.
想像自己是個助產士;你正在幫助另一個生命的誕生。雖然有功也不需炫耀。引導正在發生的事而不是你認為應該發生的事。如果你必須主導,主導的方式必須讓這位母親得到幫助,同時感到自在並且知道一切都在自己的掌控當中。
等到小孩一生出來,母親將會光明正大的說:「我們母子終於辦到了!」
Imagine that you are a midwife; you are assisting at someone else's birth. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge.When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say: “We did it ourselves!”
